Summer Term 2 - Week 4 - Suffix -ly

Dear Parents and Carers of Year 4,

The spelling rule we have been learning this week is adding on the suffix -ly.
Look at the following rules:
• Words ending in consonant + ‘y’: change ‘y’ to ‘i’ if the word is more
than one syllable
• Words ending in ‘le’: take off ‘e’ and add ‘y’
• Words ending in ‘ic’: add ‘ally’

The children will be asked to add the suffix -ly correctly to given words. They will be tested on 5 of the following words:
basic
sleepy
gentle
frantic
noble
easy
clumsy
pretty
simple
dramatic

Example: sleep + ly = sleepily

They will complete 5 of these followed by 5 of the Year 3 and 4 Common exception words.
century
heard
believe
position
surprise

Thank you for your continuing support and understanding,

Mrs Lutterloch
Year 4 Teacher
