Phonics

At Harold Wood Primary school we aim to provide all children with high quality phonics teaching in order to equip them with the necessary skills to become independent readers and writers.  Children will experience systematic phonic work which teaches the correspondences between graphemes in written language and phonemes in spoken language, and how to use these correspondences to read and spell words. We believe Phonics should be taught in a systematic way when all the major grapheme-phoneme correspondences are taught in a clearly defined sequence which enables children to build upon their previous language experiences.
